General informationThe name Philadelphia means "brotherly love" and is taken from St. Paul's letter to the Romans: "Be kindly affectionate one to another with brotherly love." In the 1600's, King Charles II granted William Penn a parcel of land in the New World as payment for a debt the crown owed to Penn's father. Established on that land, Philadelphia grew rapidly to become the second-largest English-speaking city in the world just before the American Revolution. The Declaration of Independence was signed here in 1776. Today, Philadelphia is a city known for its historical atmosphere, diverse ethnic mix, warm hospitality and exciting restaurants. Independence Hall, located near the Delaware River in Independence National Park, is where both the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were adopted. Other historic sites in the Old City include the Liberty Bell, Betsy Ross's house and Elfreth's Alley, the nation's oldest residential street.
